Entrepreneurship: More Than Words by Josh Prati

Josh Prati, Founder and CEO of Right Way Medical

Watch the Speech:

  • When people hear the word entrepreneur, the first thoughts that come to mind are business owners, freedom, innovation, and wealth. In reality, very few know what entrepreneurship is actually all about. Josh Prati has experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly first-hand. He shares his personal story from when he was an underachieving high school and college student all the way through the time he put everything on the line to chase the dream of starting his own business.

What is Entrepreneurship?:

  • The definition from defines entrepreneurship as, "the activity of setting up a business or businesses, and taking on financial risks in the hope of profit." Josh defines entrepreneurship as, "having the guts to put the dictionary definition into action." Talk is cheap. Everybody says they have or had million dollar ideas that someone else stole. The difference between those who thought of the idea, and those who pursued the idea is that the person who took the chance had the guts to fail.

What does it take to be an Entrepreneur?:

  • Josh is a prime example that grades, successes, and failures do not define us. He was a poor student in the classroom, barely passed through college, and earned his degree in a field of study that he absolutely hated. He admits that even his advisors told him that they could not believe he actually graduated. With all these "benchmarks" of success indicating he would never amount to anything special, how did he overcome the odds? What Josh lacks in high standardized test scores and college success, he makes up for it tenfold with grit, motivation, and an attitude that is incapable of accepting defeat. These intangible assets have proven to surpass everyone's expectations for Josh except himself. He just needed to find the right environment where he could reach his full potential, not where everyone else thought he needed to be.

Josh Prati's advice to young professionals:

  • What makes a business run successfully?: Relationships and support. It's impossible to build a sustainable working environment without establishing deep relationships with co-workers and employees. Working in a supportive atmosphere encourages colleagues to take chances in order to improve the company. If everyone is out to get each other, the company will rot inside out.

  • Remain Humble: Do not let success turn you into an arrogant monster. Prove to people that you could do it again. Josh emphasizes the importance of remembering those who helped you along the way. He says he would not be where he is today without all the support he had over his lifetime.

  • Search for Mentors: Find inspiring figures who will challenge you to be the best you can be. These coaches will hold you accountable and are not afraid to tell you the truth when it needs to be heard. He suggests to find someone to push you personally, professionally, and spiritually.

  • Ashland University is extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to hear Josh Prati's message. He is a true entrepreneur through and through. His story resonates with those struggling to find their place in the world, and gives them hope that one day the uncertainty will pass.
